The Litter Reduction Task Force is a joint committee that was formed in late 2003 to address the litter issues within the Region of Waterloo. Members include: City of Cambridge, City of Kitchener, City of Waterloo, Township of Wellesley, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), Conestoga College, Waterloo Region District School Board, University of Waterloo, and the Region of Waterloo.
The committee is mandated to; 1) raise awareness to the growing amount of litter in the Region; and 2) to clarify litter cleanup and by-law roles and responsibilities.
The task force staff representatives have been meeting to develop a program to achieve the following goals:
- Develop a region-wide anti-littering message
- Involve educational institutions, community groups and the private sector in cleanups and the promotion of anti- littering behaviour
- Clarify litter cleanup responsibilities
- Clarify and strengthen by-law enforcement
